Lock-in Moisture// DIY facial moisturizer recipe

Moisturizer. We all use it, we all need it, we all spend more than we should on it {if you're anything like me, you spend A LOT more than you should!}. I've been toying with my resident holistic doctor, and here's what we've put together as THE PERFECT do-it-yourself moisturizer. Every ingredient is either already in your kitchen cupboard, or on your local grocery store's shelf. No need to go to a specialty store:) Here's my recipe for what I call the "Basic B****" moisturizer.

What You Need:

  • 1 cup aloe vera gel {find one that is alcohol free, and make sure it's an actual GEL, because liquid aloe is not going to stabilize correctly!} Here's my favorite.
  • 3/4 oz. (by weight) beeswax. You can get this as a bar and grate it yourself ($ saver) or buy it in pellets. Caution: don't buy wax for candles! Those come scented with things that shouldn't go near your pretty little face. THIS INGREDIENT IS REALLY CRUCIAL... it's the secret to store-bought lotions and moisturizers. The beeswax will not clog pores, and it helps the oil and water actually mix. Because this isn't an oil-water science experiment;) Beeswax here y'all.
  • 1/4 cup almond oil {won't clog pores. Yay!}
  • 1/4 cup extra virgin coconut oil {won't clog pores either. Double yay!}
  • 10 drops of your favorite essential oil. My absolute favorite combo is lemon & basil, which has super awesome benefits for oilier skin types {like yours truly}. If you have more sensitive skin or allergies to certain fruits/nuts, please don't put those in there. Duh! And to be safe, always test the oil on a patch of skin beforehand. Here are more great options and their benefits:

1. Lavender: acne-fighting and great for healing scarred skin

2. Rosemary: brightens skin and great for hyper-pigmented skin

3. Grapefruit: brightens skin and detoxifies

4. Tea Tree: acne-fighting and acne-preventing

5. Rosewood: acne-fighting and great for sensitive skin

  • Double boiler/soap melter/metal bowl in boiling water {ghetto but effective}
  • Blender

1. Start by melting the beeswax in your double boiler.

2. Pour the melted wax into your blender and LET IT COOL. If it doesn't cool enough {I recommend room temperature}, you'll have that awkward separation-floatey-specs kind of product. Ew.

3. Mix your essential oils, almond and coconut oils with your aloe vera gel. Once the wax is cooled enough {about one hour}, start up the blender on a low speed and slowly add the aloe-oil mixture into it. You'll be able to see it magically transform into lotion. It's pretty amazing!

4. Voila! You've made your own Basic B**** moisturizer, so find a cute jar for it or something! This recipe has stabilizers {aloe gel, beeswax} in it, so it'll keep for 6 months minimum, however keep it out of direct sunlight and for extra long preservation, you can throw it in the fridge.
