The Doctor Is In {Q&A with our resident expert: Dr. Gayle Segovia}

Ok ladies, this is straight from the doctor herself! The wonderful Dr. Gayle Segovia {20 years of skin care experience and dozens of business awards for excellence, co-owner of Caribbean Blue Naturals} is answering our questions on all things MICROGUARD. You may have noticed it in some of our products, and we here at Notox Girls want to make sure our girls know about every single ingredient in their products. No secrets, no chemicals, no harmful additives. EVER.

Q: Dr. Segovia, what is microguard?

A: "Microguard is an Ecocert natural preservative system that uses 80% gluconolactone from non-GMO corn. Gluconolactone is a polyhydroxy acid that is actually known for its gentle effects on aging skin (similar but much gentler than its alphahydroxy and betahydroxy counterparts that are used in chemical peels). In microguard, however, it is used for its preservative effects, and makes up less than 2% of the final product."
Simply Put: microguard is a "preservative" but not in the harmful, chemical way that a lot of preservatives in skin care are these days. It's extracted from non-GMO corn and actually helps keep your skin younger WHILE it makes sure your natural product doesn't spoil.
Q: Some people say that microguard isn't safe... is this true?
A: "Microguard also contains 20% sodium benzoate, a food-grade preservative that makes up less than 0.4% of the final product. While there are studies showing that sodium benzoate and vitamin C react in drinks to form benzene, all testing in cosmetics is pointing to the fact that benzene formation is prevented due to many factors (other ingredients present, viscosity and temperature of the products, etc), not to mention the fact that sodium benzoate is present in cosmetics in minute amounts (less than 0.4%). You get more benzene from a whiff of truck exhaust than you do from a lifetime's use of skincare products that contain sodium benzoate as part of the preservative system. Any manufacturer who claims to not use preservatives is either lying, or is creating a hazardous breeding ground of potential problems for his or her customers!! Products HAVE to be preserved, or HAVE to be used up within a couple days (unrefrigerated) to maybe, if you're lucky, a couple weeks (refrigerated)."
Simply Put: there are significantly more harmful ingredients ALL AROUND US, than NATURAL preservatives. If you've ever had a truck drive by with exhaust fumes, that's more harm to your body than microguard will ever do to you from daily use for your entire life! The truth of the matter is, it's actually more harmful NOT to use natural preservatives. It creates a cozy environment for harmful bacteria, especially in island climates like St. Lucia. So be safe with your products ladies! If you're buying natural/organic products- make sure that your manufacturer/supplier is giving you CLEAN, SAFE products.
Q: Is microguard the best option as far as natural preservatives go?
A: " At the end of the day, in this day and age where convenience is a necessity, skincare products have to be preserved one way or another. Consumers don't have time to shop every few days for fresh skincare products. We have researched over the past 20 years, and tried many alternatives, and have settled for Microguard because it offers the most natural preservation system possible, while still actually preserving the product."
Simply Put: after 20 years of research and trying all sorts of natural preservatives, microguard is the most natural AND most efficient. So rest assured ladies, you're in good hands!
So ladies, rest assured that we here at Notox Girls have your best interests at heart! We care about what goes on your skin, and essentially, into your body!
